Player Profile

Position:
Head Coach

Experience:
27th Year

For the last 27 years, Wally Morton has recorded nothing but success as the head coach of the CSU men's swimming and diving team.

These accomplishments have allowed Morton to take on an additional role in CSU athletics by becoming the Director of Competitive Aquatics.

The 2007-08 season has provided Morton with new goals and challenges by allowing him to head both the men's and women's swimming and diving programs.

The upcoming season will be Morton's 27th year coaching the men's program and first season coaching the women's team.

As head coach for the men's team, Morton has compiled a 230-129-1 (.639) dual meet record with nine Penn-Ohio Championships, a pair of MCC titles, a Horizon League championship and 23 seasons at .500 or better.

Morton has also led the Vikings to six straight seasons with at least 10 wins, compiling a 65-20 record in that span. Additionally, the 1996-97 squad tied the 1946-47 team for most victories in a season in history with a 14-4 mark.

Morton directed the Vikings to back-to-back Midwestern Collegiate Conference titles in 1998 and 1999, earning MCC Coach of the Year honors in 1999. He was named Coach of the Year of the Penn-Ohio Conference six times, including three straight from 1984-1986.

During his coaching career he has lead 46 swimmers to the United States Senior Swimming Nationals, six to the NCAA Championships and also had an Olympic Trials finalist.

Morton came to CSU in 1974 as the Aquatic Director of the brand-new CSU Natatorium and as an assistant coach with the swim team.

Morton was named the head coach of the program in 1981 after CSU coaching legend Robert Busbey retired, and has brought regional and national prominence to Cleveland State.

However, Morton's responsibilities are not limited to coaching. As CSU's Aquatics Director, he has been extensively involved in event management for 23 international swim meets including four NCAA Division I Championships and many regional and international competitions.

Morton's vast experience in coaching and in hosting championship swimming events has made him well known in the swimming world. As a result, he has brought international recruits from such countries as Australia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Canada, England, Ireland, Norway, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia & Montenegro, South Africa, Spain and Sweden to CSU.

The 1970 Miami (Ohio) graduate was a member of back-to-back Mid-American Conference championship swim teams in 1966 and '67.

Morton and his wife, Carol, a professor at Baldwin-Wallace, have one son, Robert. They reside in Strongsville, Ohio.
